The exciting new Ghan Expedition gives you more days and nights, more stops and more time to experience more of Australia up close and personal. From Darwin to Adelaide, operating from August to October, The Ghan Expedition is an epic four day, three night journey.
Day one is Darwin to Katherine where you’ll experience your first included Off Train Excursion at the magnificent and spiritual Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge. The Katherine Outback Experience follows, giving you an unique insight into the real Australian Outback and the inner workings of life on a cattle station.
Watch in amazement the art of horse-breaking, the Riverboyne Dog Team working cattle, goats or ducks in harmony, before interacting with Bernie the Buffalo, Tin Shaker the Brahman Steer and Legend the Trick Horse.
Then sit back and relax, listening to live music including some well-known Aussie anthems and originals, often performed from a top of a horse. You can also ramp up your adventures with upgrade excursions like helicopter flights over Kakadu and Nitmiluk National Parks. Finally, it’s back on board for dinner before you fall asleep in awe of today’s wonders.
In the morning, an outback sunrise - one of the most spectacular you'll ever see - sets the tone for the full day ahead in the famous outback town Alice Springs.
You have ample time to visit the town landmarks, discover Australia's incredible flora and fauna or choose to upgrade your excursion with the ultimate outback experience; an intimate scenic fixed wing flight over Uluru and Kata Tjuta. Come the evening you'll dine beneath a canopy of stars at an authentic Outback Pioneer Dinner.
Day three and The Ghan pulls into the middle-of-nowhere stop at Manguri, where you’ll be whisked you away to the sun-scorched opal mining capital of world, Coober Pedy.
Here more than half of the residents live underground, so we explore the tunnels and caves and have the chance to mine for Opals. Visit the otherworldly underground Serbian Orthodox church and take a glimpse of Umoona Opal Mine.
Lunch is below the earth's surface before setting off to the stunning outback moonscape that is the Breakaways.
Tonight you’ll enjoy your final evening onboard The Ghan and overnight the train glides through the outback bound for the beautiful green fields and pastoral lands of South Australia, before it rolls into Adelaide. Here you’ll have the chance to extend your holiday with many adventures including the Barossa Valley or Kangaroo Island. Just ask our friendly consultants for more information.
